I am a homemaker who loves to cook and bake. I live a neutral colored life where I throw in color by adding the classic green of an apple, the bright yellow of a ripe lemon, or the vibrant orange from a bouquet of tulips on the table.
I am a girl who fills her bucket with hot water and a dash of vinegar to scrub the kitchen floor on my hands and knees. Why do I choose to do it this way? Because while I'm down there I can wipe off splatters on the cabinets that I could've missed had I been standing with a mop and also give the moldings a quick wipe down.

My kitchen tells our family's story. We must eat gluten free and therefore you will not find products containing gluten in our home. We like things fresh which means you won't find any prepared meals in our freezer. I cook from scratch and LOVE the flavor of foods! Sometimes the simple act of squeezing lime juice on a bowl of nuts or a plate of phad thai can take your meal from mundane to extraordinary.
I decorate with what I use. Green apples fill a jar next to the sink. Red potatoes add color to the hutch... and now I've found beauty in the organization of gluten free baking staples. The grains have gorgeous colors while the labels look professional and organized. I also add the expiration dates right on the fronts of the jars so that I can watch what needs to be replaced.
In a gluten free kitchen it's nice to have brown rice and jasmine rice along with baskets of potatoes, onions, and lemons. These things make great staples to use in your meals. I can't live without chocolate chips as we make the BEST gluten free chocolate chip cookies in town and they're requested often. I tend to buy items that I go through quickly like this at Costco. I love to use the sealed glass jars ensuring that my staples remain fresh.
Keeping the basics on hand allows me to prepare a meal and even bake a batch of cookies for my family without having to run to the store.
Gluten Free Kitchen Basics:
Flying Horse Thai Rice Flour which I mention here.
Brown Rice flour
Tapioca flour
Potato starch
Baking Powder
unsweetened cocoa powder
xanthan gum
Evaporated cane juice (which is just a fancy phrase for organic sugar)
vanilla (the real stuff)
chocolate chips
Brown sugar
corn starch
eggs
unsalted butter
yeast if you plan on making bread
nonfat milk powder- also for bread
salt
creamy peanut butter
and an array of gluten free noodles. The best tasting are by Bio Nature.
I hope you find this helpful. As I grow I'm trying to incorporate a more organic approach to gluten free baking and eating. I'm learning as I go.
And for the record~ I am not one who believes that every grocery item that comes into my home needs to be placed in a proper glass container. While I think pouring your olive oil into a beautiful glass bottle is appealing for me it is not practical. We go through our groceries way to quickly to pour everything into matching containers. I do "contain" my baking supplies because I find that it keeps them fresher longer than just sealing the bag.

Oh my gosh your organization and cleanliness makes me drool....as do your passion for cooking and healthy eating. Please never look in my fridge or pantry. Seriously. Ever. ;)
Sometimes I feel like I need outside help! I can see things in my mind, but when I look around at what's really in front of me...Ack! We are still in the "just moved in" stage, even though we should be past that. Oh well. God will help us get there, and I really want to get there, for all the reasons you talk about here and the previous post. The kids need the chaos to be ordered! I think if you can get general order then the small (and inconsequential) messes (couple things on coffee table, etc.) won't be such a big deal, nor so hard to tackle eventually. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home, and heart!
your kitchen always looks so inviting and pretty. i love all the neutrals...it makes the colors pop all the more!
Crazy question, well two.. do lemons stay fresh longer out of the fridge and imitation vanilla is not gluten free or you just love the real stuff?
Lissa,
we don't eat gluten free, but if we did this would be sooo helpful. It all seems so overwhelming, but you break it down great!
i just wanted to say,as i have been following you for a while now that you have really flourished lately.I know i do not know you but ive been reading for some time and find myself being so proud of you and cheering you on.Your family is sure blessed to have you as their momma and wife.
LOVE LOVE LOVE how the little glad canisters look, Lissa!
Your comment about putting olive oil in a glass container made me giggle... I have the CUTEST glass container next to my stove full of olive oil. Without fail, when my Hubby is in the kitchen visiting with me while I cook and I ask him to slide the olive oil over..he get's the BIG container out of the cupboard. I remind him that there is also olive oil in this darling, cutesy, ornate little jar by the stove and he just shakes his head and plants a smooch on my head. He and I BOTH know that's his way of telling me that glass container is worthless!! ha ha I agree. I love organization in the kitchen, every where...my Mama begs me to come over and organize her linen closets for her at least once a year! I find folding towels, sheets, pillow cases and lining them up relaxing! ;) Nice to know there is another *weirdo* out there! (and you know I mean that as the verrrry nicest compliment!!)
Oh so fabulous Miss Lissa! Love all you do~Cheers Kim
Hi, Lissa,
Could you please share where you purchased your canning jars. I really like those...they are perfect for storage. Hope you are enjoying your weekend.

Lissa, great lesson on a gluten free pantry, I have wondered what one would use instead, I am going to make your PB cookies we are not GF but I have all the ingredients.
Have a great Sunday,
Barbara

Good morning Lissa! I love this post! It is going to be very helpful for me to use the list since I am already lactose free and now I have been gluten free for a few weeks now! Gone are the stomach pains! Yay!
Love this! Your kitchen is beautiful. We are a gluten free family as well, but you are far more organized than I am with your pantry.

Every time I have clementines or oranges out on the counter I think of you....lemons and limes do it too!
I am seriously going to make the jasmine? rice recipe you posted last week and the chicken dish! Sounds YUM!
I cooked for "reals" this weekend and my family loved it!! We made a Greek shrimp dish with feta and rice pilaf!!
**Anna had a 7th grade Latin project where she had to cook a greek meal for our family, take pics and write a report!
Turned out great and very tasty!! I was like... "I'm blessing my family!!"
Luv ya,
Beth

I love this post and your last one, yes it is a home nd is is comfortable, but how lovely to have things look good when you can and when it helps!
I love this. Love how you said you decorate with what you use. It's such a great way to do it, truly! :) Beautiful, as always!!
THANK you Lissa!
Just the inspiration I needed. I am gluten free for lent in an attempt to see if it improves my health... I need all the tips I can get if I am to incorporate this into my home. And I, like you, feast on organization articles like a moth to flame.
great post!
