It's a gloriously, beautiful day here in the PNW! The sky is bright blue, the sun in shining and I thought I'd take this opportunity to share with you a little bit about my garden. My garden is evolving. I've never taken a class, have no idea what I'm doing- really but I find gardening to be so calming, so relaxing, so therapeutic.
It might be fun to share my garden with you in stages as we go through the seasons. About this time of year I'm getting excited for my spring plants! My garden is prettiest in May and June. Now as I share with you my plants I only know the common names. I think that the korean spice plant is a viburnum. You are welcome to correct me if I'm mistaken. If you have a spot in your yard that needs some spring color May I recommend this plant to you. It's smell would be hard to rival! If possible you should plant this next to your deck or entry. I think my top two favorite garden plants for the PNW would be lilacs and peonies. Lilacs because they remind me of my grandpa. He had a long driveway lined with them and every spring would fill our home full of the amazing scent and sight of lilacs. My husband also loves them because they remind him of his childhood as well. Lilacs are slow growing so I would suggest buying the largest plant that you can afford. I bought a tiny 6 dollar plant which I planted 6 years ago and I am just now able to make several bouquets in the spring.
Another favorite of mine is sedum- autumn joy. It starts out in early spring almost looking like tiny little cabbages coming out of the ground and by the early fall is taller and turns a dark reddish/ pink color. I also love blue fescue grasses sprinkled through the beds for texture and color.

In the early spring before the peonies bloom my garden is blue and white. I love grape hyacinths because they signal to me that Easter is on the way! Last year I found these darling little blue primroses at the grocery and added them to the garden for early color. My favorite way to spend a sunny afternoon is outside with my hands in the dirt, Oscar by my side, and the sun tanning my arms. My boy was so happy to be frolicking about with me this afternoon!
My star magnolias are just about to burst into bloom and behind them you can see a rod iron trellis which is in place to hold my peonies as they grow.
We were finally able to afford a small hedge around the side of the playhouse. It was just planted last week! I love how it looks. Soon I will fill the window box with spring color. We will also finish the garden around the deck area to hide the rest of the gap. After a beautiful sunny day I love to bless my family with a light a fresh meal!
Might I suggest this Mexican Chop Salad with Chili Lime Vinaigrette from the Fried Chicken and Champagne cookbook?
For the dressing place 2 jalapeno peppers- roughly chopped with seeds, 1 T chopped ginger, 1 T chopped garlic, 2 T sugar, 4 T gluten free soy sauce (La choy), 4 T lime juice in a food processor and puree until smooth. Then slowly pour in 1 1/2c canola or vegatable oil in a slow, steady stream into the mixture while the processor is running. Fold in 1/4 chopped cilantro and add salt and pepper to taste.
for the salad:
chop up some jicama and gala apples into small chunks- about 2 c. Add about 2 c of corn (frozen is fine- thaw), 2 c of unpeeled english cucumber cut into chunks and pour the vinaigrette over the top. Garnish with cilantro! yum!
** I forgot that I added chicken to this salad. I just chopped up some chicken breast and cooked it on the stove in olive oil, onion, garlic and some mexican seasonings... red pepper flakes, chili powder, whatever you have on hand.
you could also serve chips and salsa on the side.

Lissa, how wonderful that spring has sprung in your garden! You are so lucky - we're expecting more snow tomorrow (it's the never-ending winter on the other coast). Looking forward to seeing what's in your garden and that salad sounds yummy!

Oh Lissa the arborvite look AMAZING! It really really finishes of the side yard. Your garden is just beautiful. I love that I got to share that piece of your life. Seeing little Oscar made me smile from ear to ear. I actually think about him! I'm slightly jealous of your weather we have freezing rain and snow today. I'm so finished. Don't know if I can stand it anymore.

Lovely seeing pictures of your garden - adorable playhouse. I love peonies too, they remind me of my childhood as a favourite Aunt grew them, now I am endeavouring to. Spring is just starting to happen here in England and we've had the sunniest day today, so good to see blue skies and daffodils and buds everywhere. Enjoy your day :)

Lissa,
For the salad, what sort of chicken did you use? It looks amazing! Love seeing your yard come to life. I used to drive past y'alls house when I lived in Edmonds and dream of one day having a cute house like you do. Now living in Miami, I am super homesick and wished that I could be back in Edmonds. Thanks for the snip-its of home! Bless you.
It is snowing here in Chicagoland . . . waiting patiently for some sunshine. Thank you for this recipe . . . I just printed it out and will give it a try . . . sounds delicious, just like your sweet blog. :)

I love it all: the blue primrose and other flowers/plants, the recipe, the playhouse, and your honest sharing!
a reader from Indiana (my family lived in the PNW for 6 years)...that's when I learned about primroses :)
Beautiful! I LOVE lilacs too and they have a similar memory for me as well. My grandfather had this lane that had huge lilacs growing on either side of it they made this canopy and growing up my sisters and cousins all played out there every spring/summer. It is one of my favorite memories and why Lillie's nickname is Lillabel (which means beautiful lilac). I wanted to name her that but Jon thought it was too strange =) haha, so we compromised on Lillian Annabel so I could still call her Lillabel. Sorry, not sure why I just wrote all that - haha! It just brought back so many memories as I was reading what you wrote about lilacs!
Hope you are doing well. I have been horribly behind on blog reading lately and am so enjoying catching up tonight!
your weather is making me jealous! i asked my readers yesterday if they knew of any great places with better climates than sd, and i was invited to seattle several times! maybe...just maybe.
your yard is amazing! your little playhouse is just the cutest :)
fabulous! will make it, too. Love your pictures.
Molly

Without a doubt my favorite ornamental from your garden is Oscar!
Ahhh yes, it has been beautiful on this side of the mountains too! ;)
Many a yard project going on around here too ~ Looove your ideas! Especially on those things that are filled with sweet aromas! We yanked out nearly everything in the flower beds out back around our pool last year because we wanted a fresh start...have to see if any of your inspirations can withstand our 100+ summer heat...
I DO have a lilac out front and adore it. Agreed - nothing like that sweet aroma to welcome in Spring!
Hope you have a lovely lovely weekend! I'm actually heading to YOUR side of this grand State Saturday to see my baby sis!! She lives in the Capitol Hill area so I am sooo excited to walk to nearby restaurants for lunch & coffee and of course, we will be making a trip to IKEA! Fingers crossed the weather stays as nice as you've described!!! ;)
Lissa, I would love to watch your garden evolve...it brings wrmth to my heart!!!I cannot wait to garden. Hooray for the new plantings. I also connect to lilacs from my childhood. In fact, for my wedding reception I saved cobalt Arizona iced tea bottles, and just had white and purple lilacs. Made me smile all day. (15 yrs ago!) Also, will definitely try the recipe, thanks.
your kids' play house is super adorable! my daughter would love a house like that! lilacs are my all time favorite too!
I am so ready for spring...although we just had another snow...I have some flowers starting to pop up again:) Yours are beautiful...and I love your playhouse...how cute!
recipe looks really yummy too
Lilacs are one of my favs to Lissa ~ everything about them bring back memories. I have sedums in my garden too ~ and adore my peonies that I got from Mom before she sold the house. So glad I snagged those! Love seeing spring in your part of the world ~ my tulips are poking out of the ground ~ does that count??!! Happy week-end sweetie. xo
I am jealous! I am so ready for Spring!! Tiny bits of green are starting to sprout in my neck of the woods but a long way to go still!
